October puts British wool in focus

British Wool identifies October as Wool Month 2026. In its campaign update, the organisation says activity began in September and continues into November, with 18 collaborations planned during October. The programme brings attention to wool through partners and different product markets, rather than one single making event.

The update also describes a two-day Wool Exchange 3 event planned with Central Saint Martins in November. For a home maker, the immediate connection can be much smaller: look properly at the fibre already on the shelf. A campaign about wool is an opportunity to ask what a ball is made from, where that information comes from and what job the yarn might suit.

A ball of yarn is not its label

A familiar colour is easy to recognise; its fibre mixture, length and care instructions are easier to forget. Keep the band with the yarn or photograph it before it disappears. Record the brand and yarn name as well as the colour reference, especially when two shades look almost identical under a different lamp.

The Craft Yarn Council's yarn-label reference shows the kinds of information a label can carry, including fibre, gauge and care details. Read what your actual label says rather than assuming all yarn sold as wool has the same composition. An attractive photograph cannot establish the fibre content of the ball beside it.

Give existing yarn a specific task

Lay out one possible project with the yarn it would use. The useful questions are concrete: is there enough of this yarn, does it meet the pattern's requirements, and will the resulting fabric suit the object? A small project is not automatically suitable for every leftover ball.

Keep an uncertain quantity separate from a verified one. If a ball has lost its label or has already been partly used, record that uncertainty before planning a gift around it. Choosing a smaller task, combining compatible colours deliberately or keeping the yarn for a sample can all be sensible outcomes. The basket need not become a queue of promises.

Let a sample answer the fabric question

A pattern's gauge is a practical test of the fabric your yarn and tools produce. The label offers a starting point; it does not guarantee a particular result in every stitch or with every maker. Follow the pattern's sample instructions and keep a note of the tools and stitch used.

Save the sample beside its record when possible. Later, the question is less mysterious: this yarn, this hook, this stitch and this result. A written note is especially useful if a project pauses long enough for its details to become a small archaeological problem at the bottom of a bag.

Keep the next step with the project

The Crochet Project Planner includes yarn inventory, hook records, gauge records, swatch archive cards and pause-and-resume notes. Its project-bag cards keep the practical details beside the work. It is a 16-page A4 planner, with printable pages and text fields for a desktop PDF form reader; crochet patterns are separate.

For an unfinished project, record the last completed row or round and the next instruction to follow. “Continue sleeve” leaves a great deal to rediscover. “Round 18 complete; begin round 19 with the contrast colour” is more useful, provided it matches the actual pattern. The crochet restart guide walks through a careful reset.

Explore the campaign without adding a shopping list

The British Wool campaign collection offers a direct route into the participating products and the organisation's work. Use it to learn more about a material or producer that interests you. A campaign invitation does not require replacing yarn already owned or making environmental claims that have not been checked.

One manageable response is to select a project, retain its label, make the relevant sample and leave a clear record. At the end of the session, the yarn has a known purpose and the next step has a place to live. That is a useful October result whether anything new has been bought or not.
